New Year – New You

Tips for Creating and Sticking to your New Year's Resolution

It's that time again! New goals, resolutions, and a new you come with the new year. The idea of New Year's resolutions has been around for a long time. It is the idea of a fresh start, a time to create concrete goals and contemplate the next steps of your life. These can be great motivators for people to finally do what they have always wanted and commit to the steps necessary to achieve their goals. But what if you struggle to commit to your goals throughout the year? This is the case for many. A study by Strava suggests that most people give up their New Year's resolution by January 19th.

What if we told you that your resolution for the New Year didn't have to fail? Moxie Creed has a few tips for creating and sticking to your goals for 2023.

Pick a change you actually want to make

Select something that you are motivated to do. Your resolution doesn't have to be something you force upon yourself just because you "should" or because everyone else is doing it.

Break down your goals

Don't overwhelm yourself before you have the chance to start. Instead, break your goal down into smaller steps. Get as specific as possible. For example, instead of just aiming to lose weight – choose a number and time limit for that achievement. When you know exactly what you want to achieve, it's easier to hold yourself accountable.

Work backward. Start with the end goal and work your way back. A general goal is to start your own business. That doesn't give you much to work with regarding what you need to do to get there. Set smaller goals like creating a website to start your entrepreneurial journey.

Do you need a way to keep track of your goals and steps to reach them? Look no further! Moxie Creed has the perfect place to write it all down – hopes, dreams, and goals all in one place. Our Big Goals Inspirational Notebook will help you keep track of everything you want and need in 2023.

Keep it realistic

Thinking that we have this incredible ability to "self-enhance" can prompt us to make unrealistic goals. Resolving to go the gym every single day starting January 1st, even though you don't exercise at all, is likely not to work. People are sometimes unrealistic in what they think they can do. We think very highly of ourselves and that we can do anything we want. Dramatic, sudden changes often fail when trying to achieve a goal.

If you set unachievable goals, you will feel disappointed when you can't achieve them. Set small goals and make progress towards them. You will feel like you are accomplishing something and feel good about yourself.

We all need little reminders that we can achieve what we set out to achieve. Remind yourself daily with our Do the Dang Thing Inspirational Pencil Pack. With one of these pencils in your hand, you will always be reminded that you are strong and courageous. You are capable and empowered. Don’t let the thought of perfection take away from daily progress. Every step forward is a step in the right direction. You are worth the work!

Choose a specific behavior, not a broad outcome

A common pitfall is resolving to achieve a broad outcome like losing weight or getting in shape. Suppose you choose specific behaviors related to that, your odds of success increase. Ask yourself, "how am I going to lose weight?" What exactly are you going to do? The more specific you are in stating your behavior, the more likely you are to change it.

These specific resolutions have another purpose: they serve as helpful reminders.

Appreciate the process

People often get caught up in the hardship that comes with progress. As a result, they often fail to appreciate the experience. If you practice gratitude, you can learn from your mistakes and use them as a guide for what not to do in the future.

Accomplishing any goal takes consistency, perseverance, and lots of hard work. There is no easy way to achieve something worth doing. You must do it. If you can chase your dreams and turn your goals into a reality, be thankful for that opportunity. Not everyone is afforded that chance. Keep a gratitude journal and practice thankfulness. Remember the reasons it's important to keep going.

Create a support system

When pushing to achieve your goals, it is essential to have a support system. Surround yourself with people who know your plans, can help you stick to them, and cheer you on when you stumble. This is a great way to hold yourself accountable when working hard is the last thing you want to do. Having supportive people in your life to cheer you on makes all the difference. You can also create a buddy system with friends. You can encourage and support each other's goals and progress. When you share your accomplishments with others, it gives you that extra motivation to keep pushing through to the finish.

It's challenging to stick to a New Year's resolution. Most people get discouraged and throw in the towel in a few short weeks. However, achieving a goal takes time and effort. It takes time and hard work. It all comes down to three things: motivation, capability, and opportunity.

So – what goals do you have for the new year?
